Gaza: Hundreds killed in renewed Israeli strikes, Guterres leads condemnation

In a statement issued shortly after Israeli airstrikes and shelling began, the Secretary-General expressed his shock at the killing of more civilian killings in the war-ravaged enclave.

“He strongly appeals for the ceasefire to be respected, for unimpeded humanitarian assistance to be reestablished and for the remaining hostages to be released unconditionally,” his Spokesperson said.

The development came as Israeli security forces reportedly issued fresh evacuation orders for neighbourhoods in eastern Gaza including much of the northern town of Beit Hanoun, before carrying out “extensive strikes” on what it said were Hamas targets.

In the southern city of Rafah, a strike reportedly killed 17 members of one family, including 12 women and children.

Tragedy on top of tragedy: Türk

“I am horrified by last night’s Israeli airstrikes and shelling in Gaza, which killed hundreds, according to the Ministry of Health in the Strip,” said UN human rights chief Volker Türk. “This will add tragedy onto tragedy. The last 18 months of violence have made abundantly clear that there is no military path out of this crisis. The only way forward is a political settlement, in line with international law.”

In recent weeks, talks between Hamas and Israel have broken down over Israeli calls to extend the first phase of the two-month ceasefire and release all remaining hostages seized during Hamas-led attacks on 7 October 2023. Hamas rejected the move on the grounds that all Israeli forces should fully withdraw from Gaza first.

“This nightmare must end immediately,” Mr. Türk continued. “The hostages must be released immediately and unconditionally. All those arbitrarily detained must be released immediately and unconditionally. The war must end permanently. We urge all parties with influence to do all in their power to achieve peace and avoid further suffering of civilians.”
